Nurse's Notes

Nurse McAllister

This is a reminder about illness and when to keep a child home. Do not send your child to school if he or she is ill. Staying home to get the proper rest, nutrition, and parental care is for your child's benefit as well as for the benefit if the other children in the school who may be unnecessarily exposed to a contagious illness. The following are examples of when a student should remain home:
A temperature greater than or equal to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The student must be fever-free without the use of fever-reducing medication for 24 hours (a complete school day) before returning to school.
•Actively vomiting or has diarrhea.
•An illness which presents with contagious symptoms.
•Other symptoms interfering with learning or participation, such as abdominal pain; earache; itchy, painful eyes; light-sensitivity; or profuse exudate from the eyes necessitating frequent wiping.
•Severe uncontrolled coughing or wheezing,
rapid or difficult breathing and coughing lasting longer than five to seven days.
•Episodes of vomiting in the past 24 hours. A student must remain home until vomiting resolves (no further vomiting for 24 hours).
•Frequent, loose or watery stools compared to the student‛s normal pattern; not caused by diet or medication.

A student must remain home if:
1: a)  he/she looks or acts ill; b) he/she has diarrhea with temperature elevation of 100°F or greater; and c) he/she has diarrhea and vomiting.
2):  Blister-like lesions (impetigo, including streptococci, staphylococcus, and methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus infections) that develop into pustules with weeping and crusting. A student must be medically evaluated, remain home for at least 24 hours after initiation of medical treatment and remain home until determined not infectious by a medical provider. Lesions must be covered for school attendance.
•Ringworm lesions must be covered for school attendance.
•Thick discharge from eye, necessitating frequent wiping and may be accompanied by pain, redness to the white part of the eye and light sensitivity. Student must remain at home until symptoms clear or completion of 24 hours of medical provider-prescribed ophthalmic treatment.
•Measles, mumps, rubella, (German measles), chicken pox, pertussis (whooping cough), and influenza. A student must remain home until determined to be not infectious by a medical care provider.

* If your child becomes ill during the school day, the school nurse will contact you to pick up your child. To return to school, your child must be without symptoms for 24 hours and fever-free without fever-reducing medications for at least 24 hours.

*Also, the weather outside is still warm and we have sunny days ahead. Please send your child in weather appropriate clothing. If you are concerned about your child getting a sunburn during recess, you may apply sun protection prior to the student arriving at school and send your child with a hat to wear at recess. The school does not provide sunscreen, nor does it apply sunscreen to students during the school day.

Counselors' Corner

Welcome back Mustangs! Whether you are a new student, or current student, we are always looking forward to helping our students grow. Students at Irwin Intermediate School can expect a variety of experiences as well as Social Emotional Learning from the counseling Department which strives to ensure, or student are mentally and emotionally engaged daily.

Each month we encourage students to engage in exhibiting our monthly character traits that start in September with: Respect. The emphasis during the month of September will be Respectful behavior. Students will have the opportunity of nominating someone including themselves to have the photo taken, prize given and shared on the school news program for the select character trait.

Parents, as we get moving into the new school year 2024-2025, Irwin‛s Intermediate School would like to purposefully include supporting children/students holistically by providing some good resources regarding “sleep”.  Sleep is critical to help maximize your child‛s functioning, decrease daytime fatigue, and support healthy immune functions. With the many activities at school, busy schedules at home, and other diverse needs of our military connected children/students have, sleep is sometimes overlooked. Coming off busy or not so busy summer schedules and routines at the beginning of the year can be a challenge. Helping our students learn healthy habits as it relates to sleep can ensure that they will become life-long advocates for sleep. Sleep research suggest that school aged children between (6-13), need between 9-11 hours of sleep. Are children getting anywhere close to this amount of sleep?

Here are (3) things you can do now to prepare your children for a more purposeful day.
1. Start by ensuring student are winding down for bed with routines that promote sleep at consistent times each night.
2. Provide an environment that supports good restful sleep to include, low lighting, no/minimum distractions that is cool and comfortable.
3. Encourage sleep when your child is drowsy and avoid after school naps that may disrupt sleep quality.

Irwin Intermediate School Counseling Department would like to support all our families. We look forward to discussing any issues that arise and ensure that our students are present daily, receive rigorous activities that challenge them to be their best version of themselves mentally, physically and educationally. We would also like to see our students arriving rested, focused and have the support they need to be productive life-long citizens.
