Background Information: Irwin Intermediate School is located at Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg), North Carolina under the direction of Mrs. Miriam Breece, Principal. Irwin is a member of the Department of Defense Education Activity, DoDEA Americas Mid-Atlantic District, Fort Liberty Community Schools.
Completed in April 2012, Irwin Intermediate School is a 112,025-square-foot facility. The current Irwin school replaced the original Irwin building built in 1962. Irwin Intermediate School was formally dedicated with an opening ceremony on September 27, 2012.
Students attending Irwin are in the 2nd - 5th grade. Irwin is a neighborhood school and many students walk. Neighborhoods served by Irwin Intermediate School are Cherbourg, Hammond Hills, Nijmegen, Normandy Heights, and St. Mere Eglise. PreK - 1st grade students in these same neighborhoods attend Hampton Primary School. Students in 6th - 8th grade attend Albritton Middle School.
Lt. General Stafford LeRoy Irwin
Our school is named in honor of Lieutenant General Stafford LeRoy "Red" Irwin. He served as Commander of V Corps and Post Commander of Ft. Bragg from 1946-1948. Lt. Gen. Irwin attended West Point and the Army War College. He was buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery.
